Suicide Squad Review

Suicide+Squad+Review

When people think about superhero movies, they usually name a movie from the Marvel Universe. They bring up movies like Iron Man, Captain America, or The Avengers. The reason is because Marvel has been very successful in creating great movies. Rarely will you hear someone mention a DC comics movie, and if they do it’s normally one from the Dark Knight Trilogy.

The Marvel Universe has been able to create many successful movies for their super heroes. Marvel connects their heroes with each other and then brings a movie about them all together, which has proven to be successful both at the box office sales and with fans and critics.

DC does none of this. They just focus on one hero for a while like the Dark Knight Trilogy or the Superman movies. When they did join superheroes together in Batman vs. Superman, the movie disappointed both fans and critics by trying to combine three stories – The Dark Knight Returns, Flashpoint, and The Death of Superman – and just made a mess of it. Beyond that, the point of the movie was to introduce the Justice League movie, which will come out next year.

All this set the stage for DC’s first team movie, Suicide Squad. The movie deals with group of incarcerated supervillains who are recruited by a government agent, Amanda Waller, played by Viola Davis, to execute black ops missions against powerful threats, such as other supervillains or known superheroes who may turn against the government one day. In return, the inmates get reduced sentences. But if they disobey or try to escape, they get blown up, hence the name.

The plot seemed unorganized and chaotic because it jumped all over the place. There were so many flashbacks that at points it was unclear if they were in the past or in the present. In a way it made you think too much about what was going on and you couldn’t really enjoy the movie. Also, right when the movie was getting intense and creating some interest, the whole flow was interrupted by transitioning to another scene that didn’t tie into what was going on or interrupted by a flashback. The movie had too many things going on that there was no flow in the movie making it unenjoyable.

Suicide Squad had a pretty large main cast, 11 to be exact. However, only five main characters stood out – Deadshot (Will Smith), Harley Quinn (Margot Robbie), Enchantress (Cara Delevigne), Rick Flag (Joel Kinnaman), and Amanda Waller (Viola Davis). The best performance was probably from Margot Robbie portraying Harley Quinn. Harley Quinn is known for being the Joker’s crazy lover with an over-the-top personality. Robbie successfully acts threatening, seductive, lonely, and spontaneous, portraying the different personas that Harley Quinn has. With her seductive and agile body language as well as the strong New York accent, Robbie is able to play a very convincing Harley Quinn and make her of the best parts in a not so great movie.

One appearance that was greatly anticipated was Jared Leto as the Joker. The Joker is probably one of the most popular villains from DC comics, which made people excited about him coming out in Suicide Squad. The trailers and previews all made a big deal about the Joker coming out in the movie, but he didn’t play a major role, only appearing in short scenes and not contributing much to the overall plot of the movie. The same could be said for the appearance of Batman, played by Ben Affleck. Batman only came out about three times in the movie only appearing for a couple minutes. He didn’t play a role in the plot, but rather tied in to the way the villains in the squad got captured. Many were looking forward to their appearances, so it was quite disappointing realizing that these characters didn’t do much in the movie.

I think many DC fans were looking forward to Suicide Squad because it was something a bit different than what DC has done in the past. What made it even more anticipated was that it was a way for DC to redeem themselves since their last movie, Batman vs.Superman, was not that great. In the end though, Suicide Squad did not satisfy DC fans and it just added to the list of bad movies that DC has created. Overall, I give this movie a 2 out of 5.
