Music Review: The Vamps

The Vamps are an overseas boy band that is pushing their way into the charts with their debut album Meet The Vamps. I listened to this album like five times and have found they have like an acoustic-pop vibe. For instance, if Never Shout Never had a baby with 1D, while at the same time Bruno Mars and Taylor Swift hooked up and had a kid, and by some ridiculous chance those two offspring met, The Vamps would be the result. It sounds as if they borrowed melodies from Bruno and Taylor, a vocal sound sort of like Never Shout Never, while trying to keep an upbeat pop energy like One Direction.

The Vamps left the UK screaming for more after releasing its album. I feel a little differently. I think these dudes seemed to have played it very safe with a similar rhythm for like every song basically. Like half of the songs pretty much sounded like a repeat of the last sharing a similar acoustic sound with a little tweak. Most of the album heavily relied on a pretty simple, yet very catchy chorus. Whether it was All The Girls On TV or Oh Cecilia, lyrics like “… give me the eye like Rihanna” and “Oh Cecilia you’re breaking my heart…” will engrave themselves into your mind.(Listen to it and you’ll instantly know what I mean). Although, the songs were catchy, I felt as if they were not complete or just missing that wow-factor to really pull me in and keep me wanting to listen. With this being said, the band swoops in and saves the day with their delivery, more specifically, Bradley Simpson’s. Simpson has that distinct tone in his voice that allows him to truly express himself in a way that forces his voice to be heard. He can be soft talking and switch it up to a rousing shout with ease. His voice was a real game changer.  I wouldn’t say the sound of his voice, but his singing style is similar to Bruno Mar’s. Songs that stood out in the album I would say were obviously “Wild Heart” and “Somebody To You”. Without even realizing it, my feet were tapping to the beat. These songs had a cheery contemporary feel and were fast pace which was musically stimulating.

Overall, I do see commercial potential in The Vamps and score them a 6.3/10. I do not feel they earned over a 7, but I think they deserved more than a 6, and 6.5 was too close to a 7, so bam, 6.3. Meet The Vamps ranked 40 on the U.S. Billboards and Somebody To You squeezed in at number 10. The band is doing pretty well for themselves and it’s a good debut, but I don’t believe they’ve   yet reached super stardom. They’re going to have to step it up to even come close to competing with boy band bad boys such as One Direction or the Backstreet Boys.
