Like many fans, I went to opening night of Marvel’s Avengers: Age of Ultron, the much anticipated sequel to The Avengers. Although the auditorium was packed full of fans of all ages, I have to say experiencing the movie a day before all my friends was very satisfying. For three years, I have been waiting for this film to arrive in theaters and needless to say, I was not disappointed. With all the hype leading up to the film due to other movies in the Marvel Cinematic Universe such as Captain America: The Winter Solider and Thor: The Dark World, the film was bound to be great. The film was packed with action, comedy, some romance, and a whole lot of robots. This movie is a great example of why Marvel is on point when it comes to movies.

In the beginning of the film, we see our heroes attacking a Hydra base. Their goal is to obtain the staff Thor’s half-brother, Loki, used in the first Avengers movie. This scene ties in almost directly with the ending of Captain America: The Winter Solider, where Hyrda was the mastermind behind the whole S.H.I.E.L.D. operation. Once the staff was retrieved, from the base, Tony Stark (Robert Downey Jr.) and Bruce Banner (Mark Ruffalo) decided to create an artificial intelligence system called Ultron. They figured out that the staff functions like a brain, later realizing that an Infinity Gem was hidden within the staff.

While the Avengers are partying, the A.I. system awakens, and takes over several of Stark’s robots. After attacking the team, Ultron goes to two new characters, the Scarlet Witch and her brother, Quicksilver (who were introduced at the end of Captain America: The Winter Solider). All three have a common hatred for the Avengers, the twins more specifically loathe Stark. Ultron later hatches a plan to use vibranium, the material Captain America’s shield consists of, to create a better version of himself and create a robot army. He utilizes the twins to physically and emotionally harm the team, which causes the members to doubt themselves and their teammates.

Overall, the movie was great. The three year wait was definitely worth it. This film had much more character development than the first, focusing more on Hawkeye, the Scarlet Witch, and Quicksilver. Even though the whole situation was practically Stark’s fault, the team still worked together to save the day. There was some ambiguity at the end of the film that I thought could have been cleared up, but otherwise it was a great movie. This film truly advanced Marvel’s overall cinematic plan. This movie easily earns itself a 4.4/5
