Music Review: Alesso

Music Review: Alesso

This month I had to review three songs from three different artists. Of the three artists, I only knew, Carly Rae Jepsen. But this review isn’t on Carly “Bae” Jepsen, it’s on the song “Cool” by Alesso featuring Roy English.

First time hearing the song, I assumed Alesso was some sort of hipster EDM type of DJ. And after Googling him, I can confirm he’s pretty much that. Alesso is pretty hipster-ish, I don’t want to say hipster, but a version of David Guetta. The only way I can could describe this song is it’s as if you’re listening to the Energizer Bunny on Xanax. Alesso’s voice is so mellow and relaxed. His voice reminds me of dudes on the AM talk radio after a few drinks. There’s a chill piano instrumental intro which fades into a constant “ting” for the rest of the song.  I was full on board with that, but then it gets mixed with this techno beat which completely threw me off. It sounded like the Nokia ringtones were grabbed and then remixed for people to listen to in their basements. You can hear it at 1:15 minutes into the video. I would personally name the techno part, basement soundtrack 2k15. It needs to be clear that I did not enjoy that part. But if listening to the song as a whole, I would recommend hearing it at least once. And, although I did like the song, the lyrics’ weren’t that great. They actually almost don’t exist because the song is basically just chorus; there are only like two verses that are not chorus. But it’s no big deal, it’s still a pretty fun song to listen to every now and then. I probably wouldn’t be able to listen to this every day, but I could definitely picture myself hearing this song while I’m daydreaming about a hot teacher or something.

If anything, I recommend watching the music video. I thought it was really funny because he’s like this dorky guy and gets up and starts dancing in the middle of class. He then dances through the school thinking about his hot teacher and in the end gets a shot with her at a school dance, but ditches her, giving the camera a good grin before ending the video. The only thought he left in my mind was, “swag”.

“Cool” by Alesso gets a 2.8 out of 5. It would’ve been a 3, but that techno part completely kills it for me. Sorry, not sorry.
