Throughout your high school years, you dream about the perfect prom experience, but it doesn’t always happen.
Prom is a lifetime experience, from going out to shop for your dream prom dress with friends, getting ready together blasting music, and hyping up the night is a special way friends’ bond gets stronger.
A lot of people believe you should have a date to go to prom, but the truth is that you can go with anyone you like. Prom is not just for couples, but also for friends to have a memorable night. It does not matter if you have a date as long as you have fun it is a nice night.
Last year I decided to attend prom because I wanted to experience the event and get an idea of how our school celebrates it. The theme was “A Night in Venice.”
Prom is portrayed in movies and TV shows as one of the most important events for a teenager. I remember having high expectations. I couldn’t wait to attend because I wanted to create many special memories.
I attended with my cousin and friends. We had someone take us so we did not have to worry about finding a ride or getting an Uber. On the ride to the location we were blasting music and I remember feeling thrilled to arrive and experience the “perfect” night. Once we got to the hotel where the prom was being held, my first thought was the hotel was nice, but the decorations were plain. I expected there to be balloons and decorations and lights around the room like you see in the movies. I had high expectations, but the reality didn’t match what I thought, which was pretty disappointing.
Last year I was disappointed when we got to the food table. The food overall was not that pleasing, for most of the night I ate cookies to fill my stomach. It was also really crowded and it was hard to walk. People kept grabbing chairs and sitting with their friends which made the walk space even tighter.
The highlight of the evening was a 360 booth. That was one of my favorite parts of the night. They had a small table with props. My friend Sandra wore a crown, and I wore a tiara. My cousin had some glasses that said Prom ‘23 on the lenses that she wore including our friend Aneliz. Before we took a 360 video the people that were in charge of the 360 Booth asked my friends if they could take a picture of us taking a group selfie and post it on their social media. Now that I look back at the picture on their Instagram we all laugh and remember how fun it was to experience it.
This year’s prom theme was “A Night in Miami.” I remember walking in and being impressed at the decorations. They had tall centerpieces on the tables, blue and pink lights around the venue leaves on the table, and multiple colored tablecloths. They also had an arch at the entrance which made the whole event look so beautiful. I was really impressed with the decorations this year.
This year they did not have a 360 booth instead they had a NWA photo booth. They had a table full of props such as glasses, feather boa scarfs, hats and multiple different signs you could hold. One read Soy toxica (I’m toxic), which I thought was fun. I enjoyed the NWA booth better because they printed out two copies of our pictures and they also gave out a frame with a magnet or a stand up frame where we could place our picture. While last year we had it digital.
The food was the same as last year and they did not have many options. In my opinion I think they should not state they will be having food at the event. Instead they should say there will be appetizers on the ticket in order for people not to be disappointed or confused.
While my junior prom was alright and not what I was expecting, I had fun and definitely made memories with my friends. This year was definitely better. I had more fun and I danced a lot with my date. It is important to take chances because you will never know if you could have had a better time with whoever you attend with.
