Superstar artist The Weeknd has released two brand new singles for his upcoming album “Hurry Up Tomorrow,” with the new singles – “Dancing In The Flames” and “Timeless” – showing his growth in music with brand new vocals and a new collaboration with Playboi Carti.
After the release of “Dawn FM” and countless other singles, The Weeknd has been working on his brand new album “Hurry Up Tomorrow” which is set to release later this year. In early September, The Weeknd hosted a concert in São Paulo, where he played multiple songs off of his new album and two of them being the lead singles.
These new singles were released in September – “Dancing In The Flames” on the 13th and “Timeless” on the 27th.
“Dancing In The Flames” is a slower paced song to listen to once in a while. He talks about love that he would take risks for, mentioning car crashes and flames throughout the song. As a fan who’s been listening to The Weeknd since 2016, I find “Dancing In The Flames” a bit lackluster. I feel like there are multiple better options to listen to instead of this track. He has better vocal performances on past tracks, such as “After Hours,” and “The Birds Pt. 1” to name a few. Some have better instrumental selections like “House Of Balloons/ Glass Table Girls,” and even a better overall vibe to the song “The Knowing” being a prime example. Although this track was solid, with an enjoyable listen, I feel like for many fans, including myself, it didn’t live up to expectations. For some, this track could just reach the right spot, but for me this track barely cracks his top 70 tracks of all time. Overall, I would give this track a 7.2/10.
On the other hand, “Timeless” is more of an upbeat song that has a great feature from Playboi Carti. This track marks their second collaboration after the highly successful “Popular.” This song feels like we got a new mix of his old style with his new style of music. It starts off with some synthesizers and the Weeknd vocalizing, a beautiful sound that sounds like you’re about to float, and then Playboi Carti comes onto the track, utilizing multiple styles including his current regular voice and his old “baby” voice. The song encapsulates the idea that The Weeknd, and his music, is enduring where he says, “It don’t matter what they say, I’m timeless.” While comparing this track to his discography, I can see it being ranked highly for many fans. For me, I would consider this a top 20 song in his discography with a very enjoyable listen each time I play it. Overall, I would give this song a 9.7/10
Both tracks are solid songs, and I enjoyed them. Although “Dancing In The Flames” wasn’t the best lead single for his upcoming album, “Timeless” paid off as one of the best songs I’ve heard this year and I’m looking forward to the release of his album.
