Carly Rae Jepsen

Carly Rae Jepsen

In 2011, Canadian Idol’s second runner-up, Carly Rae Jepsen traded her soul for a wish and reached number one on Billboard’s top 100 with her debut single, “Call Me Maybe”. Since then, she’s gotten in the top 100 with four other songs, her latest being “I Really Like You”, peaking at number 39 so far. Carly Rae Jepsen, what can I say? She has it all from her mystic blue eyes to her innocent sounding, yet flirty verses.

Unfortunately, I’m going to have to admit, I wasn’t so pleased with her latest single. I don’t really know how to explain it, I just didn’t like this song. The lyrics sort of confused me. I didn’t know whether she was thinking of getting asked out by her crush or if she was deciding to have sex with him. I’m pretty sure it was about sex, though, with the verse, “Late night watching television, but how we get in this position? It’s way too soon, I know this isn’t love.” She later goes on talking about a temptation and how she wants him and wondering if he wants her too.

Compared to her first break-out single “Call Me Maybe”, this has the same girly-pop sound, but with a little more mature tone with the message. The whole thing still sounds as if teenager was writing in her diary or something. Do you all remember that “So call me maybe”-sound? Yeah, “I Really Like You” has sounds sort of like that, but with a different pitch. Throughout the song I just kept picturing one of those push-to-talk Barbie dolls from Toys R Us. It was just frustrating me to a point. I thought it sounded fake, if that makes sense.

And, something that made this song really odd was that if you watch the music video it’s three and a half minutes of Tom Hanks lip singing the entire time. I wanted to laugh or chuckle or something, but couldn’t. I was too busy wondering why I’m watching Forest Gump singing with Carly Rae Jepsen’s baby voice. Not only that, but the video ends with a large crowd of people dancing and Hanks, Jepsen, and all of sudden, out of nowhere, Justin Bieber at the head of the pack. Where did Justin Bieber come from? Why was he there? What ever happened to Wilson?

“I Really Like You” had me asking so many questions instead of listening to the song. I think this was supposed to be something where a group of friends or people, whatever, got together and just had fun dancing and singing. But, instead, it turned out to be a video of three different age groups creating something unfamiliar. According to Billboard, there was a total of around 67 reallys in the song. If you didn’t notice it, the chorus of the song is “I really, really, really, really, really, really like you”. Verses with this type of simplicity force you to sing along no matter how embarrassing it is. After everything is said and done, Carly Rae Jepsen is still complete wifey material and I’ll drop to one knee in a heartbeat for her, but this song just wasn’t for me. Okay, here it is. I give this a 3 out of 5. A 3.2 if she calls me, maybe.
