While students work on their research paper, Dr. Gutierrez goes over senior Ariana Acevedo Mejia’s introduction. She was able to clarify with Dr. Gutierrez if her introduction was suitable for this specific task. “The research papers are the biggest assignments in our class and so I wanted to clarify any doubts my students had,” Gutierrez said.
Dual enrollment offers students chance at college credit
Junior English teacher Venetia Rivera talking to her 4th-period class before starting the audiobook for Fahrenheit 451. One of her third-period students, Valeria Gonzalez, says that Rivera has helped make their connection stronger and she will miss her very much. “It hurts because there are people that are also in the Health Academy who won't get to experience a supportive person like that, encouraging them and pushing them to do their best in literature,” Gonzalez said.
Ready for the next journey
The district has distributed red cards, which can be used when being questioned by ICE or any immigration agents. The red cards let people know and help assert their constitutional rights to immigration agents. They can be downloaded at https://www.countyofmonterey.gov/home/showdocument?id=137315

Yondr bags were implemented at all of the middle schools in the Salinas Union High School District this year. While the results have been positive, the district has not announced any plans to expand the program to the high schools for next year.

Mr. Powell’s overseeing his fifth period Business Tech students. This is Powell’s last year at Alisal, as he plans to retire after 30 years in education.
The Magic Number
Although being a student athlete can be stressful when it comes to balancing school, sports, and work, it can be a rewarding experience. Senior Jonathan Murillo Carillo managed to balance all three when he tried out wrestling for the first time this year. “ “When it comes to family events during the week I needed to sacrifice that because of volleyball games or wrestling meets to be there for the team,” Murillo said. “The only regret I have is not joining the sport sooner. I met so many awesome people and am sad it’s all coming to an end.”
Being an athlete means more than just playing a game
At the K-Bell Invitational, junior Fernando Herrera ran the 3200m. Herrera placed 7th with 9:40.39 minutes. “Munoz and I have been talking about that this year I was going to try for that two mile,” Herrera said. “The goal for that race was to hit 9:40, which is exactly what I hit. This was a 16 second PR from last season. I got the sixth fastest time in school history.”
Growing pains
Overcoming both physical and mental hurdles, junior Marley Llamas runs 22.01 seconds in the 100m hurdles against North Salinas. “It was a tough race but I was able to push through it,” she said.
Hoping to rise to the challenge
Once fearing the 100 fly, Leonardo Mariscal stepped up when his senior teammate graduated. “I can’t do it easy, but I’m better than I was before. That’s basically what got me into the 100 fly, making it my favorite event because it allows me to challenge myself,” he said.

Blurring the line
This is one of my stair master sessions. It took me an hour to complete it, and after that, I followed it with a walk on a treadmill. It’s an exercise I’ve been able to follow through with that has worked for me.
