Crowded Hallways

As teenagers, there are many things that annoy us about high school- waking up early, homework, nagging teachers, and most of all, crowded hallways. Picture this, you are rushing to class in order to avoid being tardy, but then there is a group of students hanging around in the halls blocking people’s pathways and another group of students dragging their feet like zombies. Well, I can assure you we have all been there and it is a reality that we face everyday.

This school year we have 2,742 students, we have increased by at least 200 more students than last year. We can’t change the amount of people we have in our school, but we can try to change students’ behaviors. Such as being impolite, crowding up the hallways, bringing speakers to school, and not caring whether or not they make someone else late to class. Check out the “Hallway Traffic” video on Trojan Media (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=htV8mRqQsYQ ) where you will see how bad the hallways can get.

I find it annoying when people just stand around with their group of friends, or when students walk through the hallways slowly. People like this have no regards towards those who try to get to class on time. In order to fix this problem, people should move to the side so others can get by. We should make our hallways like a freeway lane, where the right lane is for the slow walkers, and the left lane is for the people in a rush or who want to get to class on time.

Unfortunately, I don’t think the students will change their behaviors by themselves. The teachers and the supervisors should also do something about it. They expect us to get to class on time, but they don’t help us fix this problem. They can tell students to get to class, give them saturday school, or detention, which will give students a little boost  to start walking to class rather than just hanging around with their friends.

Another thing that will help us having all doors open at all times instead of  being trapped in between the hallways  waiting until the person in front of us passes. Supervisor Julio Martinez said, “8 minutes for passing periods is enough time to get to class, but it also allows the students to linger.” He also believes that they should create a PBIS on how to respect others in the halls which should include, being respectful, get to class on time, not hanging around in the hallways, and how to be aware of other people around you in the hallways.

People have realized that this is an issue but aren’t doing anything about it besides complain. I believe this is a big problem here at Alisal High School and need to change this problem before it gets worse or before it gets out of hand. The Trojan Traits are about being Responsible, Respectful, and Safe, and so far we haven’t been doing so well when it comes to being any of these when it comes to hallway behavior.
