On November 10th, senior Karizma Ruiz signed her Letter of Intent to play softball for CSUMB. “I’m beyond grateful and excited to start a new chapter in my life,” said Ruiz.

While many students play high school sports, few get to play in college. Karizma Ruiz is one of the few who will continue her softball career.

On November 1st, 2021, Ruiz announced her commitment to play softball at California State University of Monterey Bay with a four year scholarship. Ruiz announced her intention to sign with CSUMB on Instagram and other social media platforms.

Ruiz, who has been playing softball since she was 4, has excelled during her high school career, starting on varsity since her freshman year. As the third baseman and middle infielder, Ruiz had the responsibility to keep the infield in check. She plans to play the same position in her collegiate career.

After contacting one of the coaches online, Ruiz was scouted by a CSUMB coach, who emailed that they were interested in having her on the team. “She’s an amazing scholar-athlete at our school, excelling at softball and also in basketball starring in many leadership roles. She’s an exemplary scholar athlete,” said Jose Gil, the athletic director at Alisal High.

Officially, on November 10th, 2021, Ruiz signed the Letter of Intent to play softball at CSUMB. Many friends, family, former teammates, and staff came to the signing to watch. The stage was set with many items such as balloons, flowers, and other gifts. Accompanying those items were a timeline of Ruiz’s softball career including items from previous teams such as jerseys and helmets.

“CSUMB has an amazing softball program. I plan on attending because it’s super close to home. It’s physical science program also interests me, since I plan on majoring in kinesiology,” said Ruiz

The event was streamed on the Alisal Athletics Facebook page. After the signing, many walked below and on the stage to take photos with her.  “I feel excited and blessed because not many get this opportunity to play and get an education,” said Ruiz. “This truly is amazing and I can’t wait for what’s next.”
