For the second time in two years, the boys’ wrestlers went 4-1 for duals and ended up league champions.
Some wrestlers who constantly outdid themselves throughout the season were Santiago Chaidez, Joshua Arevalo, Isaac Rodriguez, and Fabian Martinez.
The team’s performance was strong at PCALs. The team placed 4th with a score of 195 points. “PCAL is one of the strongest leagues in CCS,” Coach Rodriguez said.
They also did really well at CCS Regionals, where they scored 146 points placing them 3rd. “We were able to qualify most people who I thought would qualify,” Coach Rodriguez said.
Although the team was doing well, they ran into a few problems at CCS Masters. At CCS Masters, they finished in 2nd place with a score of 220. Unfortunately, though Isaac Rodriguez qualified to wrestle at Masters, he was unable to participate. Chaidez placed 3rd and Arevalo placed 4th, qualifying both to move on to State. “There was a couple of issues that prevented us from getting a little bit higher placing,” Coach Rodriguez said. “Isaac was not able to participate in Masters. I think if Isaac would have been able to participate, he would have helped push us over that hump, but either way all in all it was a good performance.”
State was really tough for both Chaidez and Arevalo. They both went 0-2, but even with that record, it was a good learning experience for both of them. “I’m really proud of them for just even getting there and getting to experience the whole tournament,” Coach Rodriguez said.
Although they faced problems due to their team size, along with injuries throughout the season, they managed to stay consistent with their performances at practices and tournaments. The results they have speak for themselves. “Overall, in general, it was a big success story this year,” Coach Rodriguez said.
