Mary Lambert-“Secrets” Review

Mary Lambert-Secrets Review

We first heard Mary Lambert in Macklemore and Ryan Lewis “Same Love” where she sang the chorus to her own song “She Keeps Me Warm”. The song broke records reaching eleventh place on the Billboard Hot 100 and then it became an anthem for 33 newlywed couples in the 56 Annual Grammy Awards.  She is now debuting her own single “Secrets,” a fun new song about just letting go and being yourself.

The 25 year old singer-songwriter was born in Seattle, Washington. At a young age Mary Lambert had an interest in music. She learned how to play the piano and write her own music at the age of six, and at ten she learned how to play the guitar. Lambert faced many issues during her early life, like sexually abuse by her father, struggling with her sexuality, and drug and alcohol abuse. Her life took a radical turn when she discovered slam poetry on YouTube. “There I am chain-smoking and watching YouTube videos in my bedroom at 6 AM, when a spoken word video comes on screen.” Lambert said, “I watched a couple different poets, Anis Mojgani and Shira Erlichman, and I became obsessed. I knew I had to do it, that it was a part of me that needed to be explored.” After that Lambert participated in many poetry competitions and she was granted the opportunity to represent Seattle in the Brave New Voices International Poetry Competition. She even wrote her own book titled, 500 Tips for Fat Girls, that touches issues that are important to the young artist.

There were many reasons why I thought this song was entertaining. When I first heard the song, I thought it was worth listening to and having on my iTunes. The song reminded me of Meghan Trainor’s song, “All About That Bass”, which is about embracing your figure, but I believe this song has more meaning to it. The way I interpret the song is that when you learn to accept your fears, you let go of your problems, and like Trainor’s song, learning to love your body, you will be happier with yourself.   “Secrets” is a reflection to Mary Lambert’s personality. “This song is my dirty laundry and that’s actually really freeing.” the singer says.

Additionally I enjoyed all the musical features this song has. You are able to hear all the musical instruments like the rhythm of the drums, the happy tune of the piano and the brilliant trumpet players. You are able to hear the happiness in her dulcet voice, making the song soothing, letting you relax and enjoy it. Its catchy lyrics and beat  are also something  that as her audience I enjoyed. My favorite phrase of the  song was  “I know I’m not the only one/Who spent so long attempting to be someone else/Well I’m over it/ I don’t care if the world know what my secrets are.” I believe these lyrics are inspiring for audiences that have trouble expressing who they really are. She, like many other artists in the industry, is willing to talk about her problems society does not want to hear. She wants to let everyone know her secrets.

Overall I think Mary Lambert has a whole lot of potential. She is young and smart, and writes about issues our society faces. She isn’t afraid and wants to inspire people to value themselves. I am certain that an artist like her speaks to you with her music, and I hope she has great success on her future career.
