Angels In London

Angels In London

The annual Victoria’s Secret Fashion show aired December 9th on CBS and as per usual, caused a rather positive outrage on the internet over the models because of the lingerie and the musical performances. The show trended worldwide on popular websites like Instagram, Tumblr and even Twitter where there were more than 30k tweets on the topic. The show went down at the Earls Court Exhibition Centre in London after previously only having been hosted in New York. The company wanted to make sure this year was unforgettable.

The lingerie giant has organized this fashion show since the 1990’s & started airing on television since the early 2000’s. Edward Razek, the senior creative for the brand and Monica Mitro, a producer of the show said in an interview that they really wanted to, “go all out”  with this year’s show, more than any other one of the previous years; hence the choice to move the show so far east. It’s easy to believe Razek’s comments to “go all out” as the show was rumored to have cost a total of $20 million! A shocking number for many, but possibly not for VS since their annual revenue surpasses 6 billion.

Casting for the models that walk in this show starts off in late October and early November. They prepare their bodies with athletic work outs and from what some of the models have to say about their first casting, it’s not as easy or nearly as hard as a first time job interview. Monica and Ed have said that the main requirements for these ladies are the height of 5’9 or taller, have healthy skin and hair, be in shape and have a good personality. Martha Hunt has modeled for the brand for two years now and says that it’s very nerve-wracking and Lily Aldridge said that her legs basically felt like, “cement mixed with Jell-O.” Fortunately for Aldridge, she’s now an angel for the brand along with Adriana Lima, Alessandra Ambrosio, Behati Prinsloo, Doutzen Kroes, Candice Swanepoel and Karlie Kloss. The angels model with exclusive multi-million dollar contracts who work for Victoria’s Secret and are always the ones with a guaranteed spot on the infamous catwalk.

Twenty Five year old Behati Prinsloo kicked off the show for the first time and said that she couldn’t believe it, and that she was very nervous but, it was an honor and her BMF, (best model friend) Candice Swanepoel closed it. The annual fantasy bra this year was no more as there were 2 fantasy bras, each worth $2 million and worn by veteran models to the brand, Alessandra Ambrosio and Adriana Lima. All 46 models strutted their stuff on the runway in six separate segments; gilded angels, exotic traveler, dream girl, fairy tale, university of pink and angel ball.

The musical guests Ed Sheeran, Ariana Grande and Hozier all performed, as did Taylor Swift who performed for her second consecutive year on the show and even wore some lingerie herself to get on the same page as the models. Other celebrities at the show, included Liam Payne, Olivia Palermo, Ellie Goulding and Ed Westwick. With all the models and celebrities on the roster, it’s no surprise this is called the “hottest night on television.”
