Music Review: Kalin and Myles

Kalin and Myles is an American hip hop and pop duo from the San Francisco bay area. The duo consists of Kalin White and Myles Parrish. The two were working on their own raps and productions until they came together in 2011.

I tried going in and listening to the Dedication EP with an open mind, not being such a huge fan of rap and pop music. I prefer alternative and alternative metal bands like Rage Against The Machine. Don’t get me wrong; these guys are pretty good considering the their first single “Love Robbery” quickly racked up over 1.8 million views on YouTube and 150K streams on Spotify and over the course of two independent EPs, the band sold nearly 300,000 digital singles to date, but this wasn’t that great or outstanding.

All of their songs have “turnt up” or some sort of variation, and writing music about sex and being “high” seems unimaginative. The songs on the EP don’t sound like a lot of time was put in creating the songs since the lyrics seem pretty basic. In the songs “Dedication” and “You’re the Only One I Need” have lyrics that consist mostly of typical compliments that you would give a girl. In “Trampoline” the song is packed with sexual innuendos. Ironically, the song “I Don’t Really Care” has more meaning than the rest of the songs on the EP. The lyrics are mostly about dream chasing and how they don’t really care about dealing with adversity since it’s something they have to do in order to “get what you love or settle for something you don’t.”

The four songs on the EP are pretty upbeat with a similar tone between them. If you are into Jack & Jack or Shawn Mendes, then this is a group that you would most likely enjoy since Kalin and Myles target the same audience. I would rate this a 2/5.
