Let’s Cook! What slang is in and what’s out?

Not everyone agrees with the slang today, but we can all agree that slang is a crucial part of each generation.

Have you caught up with the latest slang? Slang words like bussing, delulu, mewing… Whatever the case is. We can all agree that some of them have got to go!

Nowadays, social media is the biggest factor for the phrases we use with apps like Tiktok, it is easier to have these phrases stuck in your head when you’re constantly seeing them on your  FYP. It has become evidently clear how much slang has changed over the years and not in a good way. With unnecessary, unfunny phrases it can get annoying quickly.

For instance, the term gyatt. According to Urban Dictionary, the definition of this word means, “a shortened term for the word god damn and used when they see someone that has junk in the trunk essentially. This word is mainly used on women more than men, which can be excruciating. This word became popular last year and within a month became overused and overall annoying. For senior Maritiza Ramirez, the word should stop being used. “I would want the word gyatt out because it can make people uncomfortable and it’s annoying,” she said.

Another word that has become outdated is the word delusional. If you were to ask what connotation the word delusional would have 10 years ago they would probably respond saying negative because no one wants to get called crazy. If you were to ask a middle schooler now they would tell you the opposite. They would explain to you that “being delulu is the solulu. ” Which is short for saying “delusion is the solution.”

It gives praise to those who are delusional when it comes to relationships or crushes. For instance, when your friend tells you her crush stared at her for 0.03 seconds longer than usual we all automatically assume he’s into her. It was fun to say at first as a joke, but now the word has finally gone back to its original meaning. “I feel like if you still say that word now you’re actually crazy or cringey,”  senior Giselle Aguilar said. Overall, this word has become out of style. I would vote it out.

Most people can argue that some words lose their popularity in a short time span and others words that stick like gum. For example, the term ate. The word’s definition is basically saying they did something well. “You ate that up ” might be saying the person has a nice outfit or they did really well on their essay or test. It is a phrase of admiration regardless.

This phrase hasn’t lost its spark yet and will probably not lose it in a while because of how essential it is in a Gen Z’s vocabulary. I would say that this word is still in. I like this word because I use it more than I should. At first I would think that the word was kind of cringey, but then I started to say it unironically that it got stuck in my vocabulary. I would also hear friends say this a lot, so I guess I could say I got it from them. I think this word still hasn’t lost its spark because many people still use it, and it hasn’t gotten old yet.

When you hear the word charisma what do you think of? Most people think of a charming person or smooth talker. For Tiktoker’s and teenagers today, they think of the slang term “Rizz”. Both groups of people are correct. The word Rizz comes from the word Charisma (chaRISma).

You might have heard people around your school say the expression “Rizz them up”. This generally means to charm someone. Or the phrase “Jordan has rizz”= Jordan is charming. If someone tells you that you are a “level 10 rizzler” then consider yourself to be the cream of the crop because it is rare to be called this. Even though most people now find this word cringey or annoying, I think it’s still funny. The cringeyness that comes from this word is what makes it funny. You can joke to your friends and it will never get old.

A word that has skyrocketed into fame this year, is cooked. The word can either have a negative or positive meaning. There are three situations where someone might use this word. 1. “Let him cook” means don’t interrupt him. 2. ”I’m cooked” This usually means I’m done for. The last variation someone might use this word in is 3.) ¨She cooked¨ which is another way of saying she ¨ate¨. This word has to be the funniest to me and the most fit for use because of the many ways this word can be utilized. It is so catchy and very fun to say that even adults use it. My dad has caught on with this term and now uses it every time I see him. I think this word still has a long way to go and for that reason I believe it should stay in.

Not everyone agrees with the slang today, but we can all agree that slang is a crucial part of each generation. Whether it´s the word “fly¨ from the 90´s or ¨lit¨ from the present time, the words each hold a significant meaning to our time, and whether you love or hate some of the new terms, they’ll only last until the adults start using them and by then something new will come along.
