*This review contains spoilers.*
After a rough first season of Daredevil: Born Again, Season 2 finished off really strong and it gave me the same vibes as the original Netflix series. The whole season was very consistent and the worst episode was probably episode 8.
The new season brings back fan-favorite characters from the original Netflix series, including the original actors, Charlie Cox as Daredevil, Vincent D’Onofrio as Kingpin, Ayelet Zurer as Vanessa Fisk, Deborah Ann Woll as Karen Page, Wilson Bethel as Bullseye, Michael Gandolfini as Daniel Blake, Genneya Walton as BB Urich, and Camila Rodriguez as White Tiger.
The series also brings back and introduces new characters like Jessica Jones from her own show and the Defenders series from the Netflix era. And the show introduced a new character named “Mr. Charles” played by Matthew Lillard. Charles is a CIA operative who cooperated with Kingpin on their joint weapon smuggling scheme before Fisk stole the weapons.
The season consists of Daredevil and Karen building a team and trying to expose Fisk, while on the run being wanted and hunted by Mayor Fisk’s Anti-Vigilante Task Force (AVTF). He also needs any help he can get which results in him working with people he may not want to.
Fisk, still being mayor, is still as evil and corrupt as ever. In the first episode, Daredevil investigates a cargo ship used by Fisk for his illegal weapons smuggling operation and to destroy the evidence. He orders the Task Force to blow the ship up with all the crew still on it.
Fisk also puts the entire city under martial law where the AVTF can act extremely aggressively to anyone acting outside the law and have a shoot to kill order on both Daredevil and Bullseye.
Speaking of Bullseye, he’s always been my favorite villain since 2021, but now it’s no argument, he’s a top 5 MCU villain.
He steals every scene he’s in. For example, in Episode 4 he had a sequence where he was fighting a squad of AVTF agents in a diner and it was the coolest thing Marvel has done in a long time. It was shot beautifully and it was a good showcase of his abilities because it looked like he was throwing forks and knives blindly, but he killed 3 agents like that.
Later in that same episode, Fisk has a boxing match and after he wins, Bullseye infiltrates the arena and attempts to kill Vanessa and Fisk blocks the object with his champ belt and breaks it. However, a glass shard still got her in the head and she died in the hospital. In the finale, Matt and Kirsten defend Karen Page in court since she was arrested by the AVTF for allegedly abetting vigilante suspects and aiding Daredevil in the episode prior.
Matt calls Wilson Fisk to the stand to basically interrogate him, the whole exchange between D’Onofrio and Cox was acted so well and I was so immersed the whole time. I think it was Cox’s best performance.
But interrogating Fisk isn’t the only thing Matt and Kirsten’s had up their sleeve. They’re allowed to present the video testimony of Christofi Savva (played by Yorgos Karamihos), who worked on the Northern Star which Kirsten had recorded earlier in the season.
In it, Christofi testifies that Fisk was behind the weapons shipment and the sinking of the Northern Star in the first episode, which set up the season’s main conflict.
But since he was “silenced” by Fisk’s right hand man Buck (Arty Froushan), they weren’t able to use that as evidence unless someone who was actually on the ship could testify right there and then.
And for Matt to overturn Page’s trial and take down Fisk, he announces, “I am Daredevil,” in open court.
The season ends with Matt in prison and Fisk on his private island since he had to revoke his citizenship and go into hiding otherwise he’d be in prison. But in a way, that island is his own prison since earlier in the season he said he hated being in the sand. Bullseye gets tracked down by Mr. Charles to work on behalf of the government and are last seen on a plane.
One thing this season did was make me care about some of the supporting characters from last year. For example, BB Urich (Genneya Walton), White Tiger (Camila Rodriguez), Kirsten McDuffie (Nikki M. James) and Daniel (Michael Gandolfini), are so much cooler now because they were more fleshed out. Compared to last season where I barely even knew their name.
White Tiger especially was very cool and I’m glad she had more action scenes. Even Heather Glenn (Margarita Levieva) was interesting. All season she was seeing visions of Muse and in the finale she basically embraced him by putting on his mask. Recent set photos of season 3 show her in a full blown Lady Muse costume, which also looks very good.
Finally, Jessica Jones is amazing and Krysten Ritter played her perfectly again. And she’s not as reluctant to use her powers as she was in her show (super strength and limited flying). And Luke reunites with Jessica and their daughter in the finale.
This season only had a few small gripes for me. For example, I wish they touched on Matt’s religion more, which they executed beautifully during the Netflix era. He really only had two scenes where he was praying.
The absence of Spider-Man was also annoying because he would definitely be there, but legally he’s not allowed to appear in shows because Sony is weird and hates money, as well as distracting from Daredevil.
On the plus side, Daredevil’s costume FINALLY has the double D’s we’ve been asking for since 2015. The costume starts black and throughout the show as the suit gets damaged the black chips off and shows the red underneath, which I think looks really cool and is unique to the show.
Bullseye also has some minor changes to his suit that make all the difference. He now has a faint bullseye logo on his head and white lines near his collarbone like in the comics. His mouth is still covered, but Bethel’s performance is so good his eyes are all we need to see to understand him.
The fight scenes this season were also strong. In a callback to the Netflix series, this season had its own hallway scene with Jessica and Daredevil fighting the Task Force agents, which was cool, but it wasn’t shot as well as they did during the Netflix show where it would be one shot and feel so real and dramatic.
Kingpin had his own hallway scene too where he was killing Daredevil supporters after he was exposed in court and it was awesome to finally see him snap.
He killed one of them by picking them up and breaking their back on the edge on a wall which was brutal to hear and see. It goes to show how strong he really is and twisted.
The show was already renewed for Season 3, and set photos show Luke Cage and Iron Fist coming back with the original actors (Mike Colter and Finn Jones), and I’m glad Marvel is bringing them back and I’m confident they will do the Heroes for Hire justice.
Daredevil is one of my favorite Marvel characters, so I was genuinely heartbroken to see how much of a disappointment Season 1 was. I’m glad the writers got it together and brought us a really good story of The Man Without Fear. I would have to rate this second season a 8/10.
