Celebrities are constantly in the lime-light, which comes with the job of being an entertainer and having millions of fans. Those millions of people want to find out everything the celebrity does, good or bad, so they can know them more personally. When a celebrity does something bad, many judge them on whether they are good or bad role models.

Miley Cyrus was once the Disney Channel favorite, Hannah Montana. As she grew up she detached herself from that character and launched her new career as a singer. In the efforts to leave her Disney character behind, she began to give vulgar performances. When she performed at the 2013 VMA’s, she quickly went from the Disney role model to the person parents didn’t want their children to follow. Almost immediately after, she began to be judged by millions on her risque performance. Many hoped that she would have taken a different route in trying to show us how grown up she was, but Miley has the right to do whatever she wants. It is no longer her responsibility to be a role model as she no longer represents a Disney character. Unfortunately, she went too far in trying to not be goody goody Hannah Montana.

In contrast to Miley, Beyonce has been a real role model. Beyonce is one of the most driven, talented, intelligent, and focused celebrities in the music industry. Not only does she keep releasing chart topping songs, but she fulfills her responsibility as a wife and a mother. She gives off so much confidence, enough to inspire women around the world to have confidence in themselves and that women can truly run the world. Her performances show how strong and confident she is, but she never gets to the point where she does something inappropriate.

Now, some may say that parents are responsible for telling their kids what is good and bad behavior. That is true to some degree. But celebrities have major influence on their fans and it seems like they don’t even know it. The fans they have that are still learning what is right and what is wrong are normally younger people. Their role model is normally someone they admire and celebrities tend to be those people. Celebrities should realize that they are not just looked at for entertainment, they are admired by many people, which is mostly young fans. They can take advantage of the fact that people look up to them to inspire them to do great things. That is a good enough reason to be a good role model.

Many question whether celebrities should be role models or not. I feel celebrities should be looked at solely for entertainment purposes. Their job is entertainment and they don’t necessarily have to worry about the being a good example. Yet, with the roles they play they may be tied down to having to be role models, as in Miley Cyrus’ case. They have put themselves out there to be watched by millions and that brings judgement. If they do not want to be judged, then they have to act like role models.

Artists, like Miley Cyrus, should take Beyonce as an example of how to show that you are grown up and that you are your own person. Some celebrities use the excuse of expressing themselves to make up for bad behavior. It is still possible to express yourself without acting inappropriately.
