Many people in high school are not too sure about what they want to do with their lives after high school, but I do.
I have always had an interest in being in the beauty industry. And I wanted to start just to make sure it was really what I wanted to do. I came across eyelash extensions by scrolling through my feed on Instagram and TikTok, and it looked fun to do because you can add a lot of creativity into it by coming up with your own styles of sets that you provide and I am a very creative person so that’s what really led me towards choosing to do eyelash extensions.
Getting your eyelashes done is a really great thing because it gives everyone the opportunity to be spontaneous and try a new style until they find their desired style that fits their eye shape best. When most people think of eyelash extensions they think the worst because it’s working a lot with your eyes and fumes from the glue that can go in your eye if the lash technician does not prep the eyes correctly or even by the client slightly opening their eyes.
Many women adore the idea of having eyelash extensions because it makes them feel confident and more put together even without getting fully ready.
I started doing eyelash extensions out of complete boredom. One day toward the end of my junior year I was trying to think of new hobbies I could start, and I had previously been seeing many videos on my TikTok “For You Page” and it seemed like a lot of fun and something I could really put my all into since this was the industry I hope to see myself in. I then bought a mannequin head to start practicing on, just until I get my license. I purchased everything completely on my own, so it really does feel good to have finally invested into a hobby/skill that I really enjoy.
I spent many hours day after day trying to perfect the “perfect lash set”, until I realized that I am just a beginner and all of the photos I was seeing of other people’s lash sets were done by people who had been doing them for years. I then started to take my time instead of rushing a set and then getting upset when it did not come out how I expected.
It soon got to the point where I wanted to give up on learning how to do eyelash extensions. After being tempted to give up, I eventually watched new videos on different techniques and went to shadow some of my close family friends who do them for a living to see the many different ways people do things and try to pick up on some of those things, which eventually made everything so much easier because I finally found a way that works perfectly for me.
Something that also kept me going when I felt like giving up was the fact that doing eyelashes gave me a therapeutic sensation. This is because it’s really a space where I can focus and be in my own area. Making the lash fans was very difficult for me at first, but it has come to a point where I love making them. I try to practice everyday and looking back at the first set I have ever done compared to the most recent one gives me a sense of accomplishment because I can see the amazing improvement I have made, and that really keeps me going with this skill.
My future goals that accompany learning how to do eyelash extensions is to become an Esthetician and perform many different services such as facials, eyebrow waxing, eyelash extensions, and eyebrow tint/lamination. In order to get to this point in my life I plan to go to a beauty school and get certified, and then licensed for every one of these services. And once I am completely set and done with all of my classes, I hope to finally open up my own beauty salon where everyone can go and feel like they are in a safe space.
In the meantime I am going to stick to doing eyelash extensions and work for my certification and license once I turn 18 years old.
