Music Review: Basic Vacation

If you like bands like Imagine Dragons, Foster the People, and F.U.N then you will definitely love Basic Vacation. Basic Vacation is an indie pop band who surprisingly has not reached sell-out status. The band is composed of three members: Chris Greatti (vocal-guitarist), Jon Paul (bassist), and Mike Montalbano (drummer), and they have just released their first 5 track EP album through Atom Factory Music and Capitol Records.

The first song in their album, “I Believe”, is not only my favorite song on the entire album, but it’s also melodious song that will have you humming the lyrics and tapping your foot to the beat. It will even make you dance throughout the song. It’s a song that everyone can relate to. The song talks about how a couple can prevail through anything if they believe in themselves and in one another. Anyone who listens to the song will surely be drawn to it in an instant like I was.

The next song on their album is “Jaime”. “Jaime” has more of a slow, somber mood to it compared to the other four tracks on the album. The drum and bass/guitar solo in the beginning just pulls you in and makes you want to listen to it. Personally, I wouldn’t have this song on my everyday play list. I’d only listen to this song if I was in a certain type of mood. Either way, this song is phenomenal.

Have you ever heard of songs that have decent lyrics but the sounds in the background just overpower the lyrics? Well, the next song, “It’s all happening now” is that type of song. This song in particular isn’t my favorite. It seemed quite boring to me. It sounded as if no other instruments were being played except the drum. It just lacked uniqueness. At some points throughout the song, some of the lyrics, “It’s all happening now, it’s all happening now, oh , oh” was repeated too much for me. The beats just didn’t work well with the song.

The third song, “You’re in my head” is such an upbeat and enthusiastic song. This song is the type of song that when you listen to it, you feel invigorated. The beat has so much energy in it. It is just astonishing. This song will also have you singing the lyrics with Greatti. It seems like Greatti puts all his feelings and his emotions into this song when he sings it. It’s like he’s pouring out his emotions and he’s finally telling his partner what he truly feels. Unlike “It’s all happening now”, the lyrics go well with the tone and beat of this song. This song, as well as “I Believe”, has such a catchy tune to it without overpowering the meaning of the songs.

A song that has the best of both worlds (no pun intended) is the last song, “Worlds Collide.” This song reminded me of the song “Pompeii” by Bastille because of the interchanging beat and tempo. It invigorates you. In the beginning while Greatti is singing, the song has an upbeat tempo, and then towards the middle of the song the beat becomes slow and mellow. At the end, the beat just rises and has so much exuberance.  For that reason, this song is definitely radio quality.

Overall, the EP was definitely a great success. The energy, chemistry, the quality of the music, and the meaning behind every song is just amazing and over the top. If Basic Vacation doesn’t make it big in the music industry, there is something definitely wrong with how America views music. I would give the album 4.5 out of 5.  I am ecstatic to say that I will definitely be looking forward to them releasing their first full length album later this year. While waiting for the full length album, you can listen to this EP album by purchasing it through iTunes.
