After just a year of waiting, Amazon is keeping the momentum moving with a brand new season of Invincible. With Season 3 being considered the best season of the show so far, anticipation was high among fans who’ve been waiting for a little over a year.
Invincible Season 4 kept a similar schedule compared to the previous season, the first three episodes were released on March 18th, with an episode coming out every week and the finale airing on April 22nd. The season had 8 episodes in total, just like the previous seasons.
I was very excited to see the brand new season, since I fell in love with Season 3.
A big reason for me picking up and watching the show was because a friend of mine, Christopher Ojeda, recommended the show and I started watching it and I’ve been hooked ever since.
Personally, Invincible is my favorite show. I went on a deep dive into the comics, reading through all of the issues online, and then I even bought a few physical copies of the comics (issues 66-84), so I had a rough idea of what this season would look like.
I feel that the contents of the show were sort of split in half. With the first half tackling all the events going on at Earth and setting up for the second half, while the second half is more action packed once they leave Earth and enter the Viltrumite War.
The first half of the season, I definitely felt that it was weaker, since there were both highs and lows with the first two episodes standing out more than the other two.
It picks up right where we left off from season 3, with about a 2 week time skip. One of my favorite parts was the darker, more serious tone that was felt right from the start, since it shows how much Mark is dealing with the consequences of the Conquest.
Also, I love how in a way Invincible’s blue suit represents a darker, more ruthless version of himself, rather than the pure hearted hero he once was with his iconic yellow suit, since in these episodes we see Mark hold back less and actually kill villains for once since last season he changed his suit as a fresh start since he cut ties with Cecil, now becoming more independent.
The next episode brings both a fun and serious tone, with Nolan’s backstory and the history of the Scourge Virus which wiped out most of his race (the Viltrumites). I really enjoyed the bonding between Nolan and Allen throughout this full episode, and I was glad that Allen was starting to get more screen time, since he’s my favorite character in the show.
I also felt that the action scenes were amazing in these two episodes, since I noticed that the animation is significantly better than what the start of last season was since last season started off with Doc Seismic, who is one of my least favorite characters, as the lead antagonist for the opening episode. Also the animation seemed much better than the start of season 3 since last season there were scenes with poor animation, like the infamous stair scene in episode 1.
The lows of the whole season were definitely episodes 3 & 4, although episode 3 was very enjoyable but it didn’t have the same charm as the first two episodes.
The story line of this episode has never been my favorite since it mostly focused on Titan, who has been a recurring character in the series, the first time he showed up it was amazing, while the second time around it was a snooze fest since it revolved around his tension with Mister Liu and when Mark had to go and help clean up the mess he got overpowered by Liu’s dragon form. As a “cherry on top” Mister Liu got defeated off screen so we didn’t get to see the climax of the episode.
Although this episode was more enjoyable than last season’s episode that focused on him, I wouldn’t consider this episode one of the best of this season since it doesn’t hold up compared to other episodes that had a better story and action sequences. I did enjoy all the subtle references it had to previous episodes like Oliver carrying Titan like how Mark did in the last two times Titan appeared, and how they used the song “Tom Tom” once again when the Flaxans came back to invade Earth.
Episode 4 was also boring and uninteresting. This episode reminded me of Stranger Things’s Season 2 episode “The Lost Sister” since it felt unnecessary to the story.
I thought that the overall idea of this episode was cool with Mark going to hell to help Damian Darkblood take down the villain Volcanikka. I just felt that it dragged on too much since this episode was one of the longest in the whole series.
The end of the episodes had one of the best moments though, since it brought back Invincible’s iconic yellow and blue suit because Mark felt that he didn’t deserve to wear that suit since he was becoming more ruthless so wanted to go back to his old ways, and then the return of Nolan and Allen on Earth.
The second half of the season is definitely when things get turned up a notch. As a whole, this half is a masterpiece by itself with it having just purely insane moments.
Sandra Oh had a stellar performance as Debbie in episode 5 with her argument with Nolan, you can truly hear the amount of emotion portrayed in her voice acting.
Another huge highlight of the episode was the final battle where Mark and Conquest had a rematch.
This was honestly the best battle in the whole series, it was straight to the action with little dialogue. When watching this I even felt grossed out when Conquest started ripping out Mark’s guts, the scene felt so long during this, and Steven Yeun’s performance of Mark was amazing since he made it feel like he was going through so much pain.
One of my favorite moments in the whole season was in episode 6 during the final battle. It reminded me of Avenger’s: Infinity War when Thor returned to Wakanda since Mark, Nolan, and Oliver came in with a bang, crashing through Telecria helping out the rest taking down the rest of the opposing Viltrumites.
The actual peak of the season comes in episode 7 which plays like the actual climax of the season.
I felt that this episode was pure perfection, with great dialogue, action, animation, and intensity. Thragg finally felt like a huge threat since he was so calmly beating everyone, showing that he was always holding back.
The animation when Mark, Nolan and Thaedus exploded Viltrum was some of the best animation the show ever had, and the immense shock when Thragg came dashing in ripping off Thaedus head and crushing it then going and easily beating both Mark and Nolan in a 2v1 had my jaw on the ground. Comparing this to the rest of the series, this is definitely a top 3 episode in the entire show.
The season finale was way more tame compared to other season finales, which I really liked. This episode serves as an epilogue instead of an action packed conclusion.
One of my favorite parts of this episode was how they portrayed Mark’s trauma after brutally losing to Thragg, since he was having visions every so often of Thragg coming and killing the person he was with.
The first time this vision happened I was so shocked since it had me convinced that Thragg actually killed Debbie, but it was all in Mark’s head.
The visuals towards the end of the episode where Mark and Thragg had a confrontation talking about the future of Earth, where the Viltrumites will live in secret amongst humans was amazing, since the sunset in the scene added a more dramatic tone to the scene.
The post credit had to be my favorite in the whole series, since we see the final message from Thaedus that he left for Allen, telling him to use the scourge virus no matter what.
As a whole, this season is the best one yet, with only one episode being mediocre. I loved that the stakes seemed way higher than ever since we got introduced to the strongest villain in the whole show.
Although I would say the Season 1 finale is still the best episode in the series, this season’s episode 7 comes as a close second.
I am really looking forward to season 5 since some of my favorite moments in the comics should be adapted this season. I would give this season a 9.5 out of 10, making this the best season of Invincible yet.
