Last year the boys’ golf team finished in 4th place in the Mission Division of PCAL. “All the schools were really good,” Coach Moshe Garcia said. “We could have been better; we didn’t finish where we wanted to but I’m not disappointed in the least at all.”
The team lost four players to graduation; however, Coach Sunil Patel felt positive in the new and returning players to fill in the empty spots. “We lost four of our starting six players because they were all seniors,” Patel said. “ We have great talent in the upcoming players.”
This year, the team was made up of five returners – juniors Eduardo Lopez-Ramirez, Jhonn Silva-Tomas, Ariel Ramirez-Perez, and Edward Martinez; and sophomore Victor Ruiz. Joining the team is freshman Alexander Deniz-Manzo.
The team dropped down to the Cyprus Division, having been in the Mission Division last year, where they finished third in the league championship.
The season ended with the team tying for third in league with Rancho San Juan right behind Saint Francis.
The players said they were nervous during the PCAL final but were able to overcome it. “For some reason I turned out very nervous at first,” Eduardo Lopez said. “But after the first hole, everything started to calm down and at the end of the day I shot a 95.”
Bonding with teammates always feels nice, but what makes the game special is being able to connect with your opponents as well. “It was really amazing and fun,” Ariel Ramirez said. “I was really competitive, but for the most part, I really enjoyed it because there were only two people in my group: me and another kid, which made it more fun.”
Patel agreed. “Everyone did really well,” he said. “I was expecting the challenge of the course might get to some of the players but all six did really well, better than what they expected.”
“The season was really good,” Silva said. “A lot of fun, meeting new people, hanging out with the same people, as well as making more memories.”
Patel believes all the starting players had improved. “This was a great building year for our golf team,” he said. “I’ve seen so much improvement. Under the leadership of Coach Garcia, Camacho and myself, we worked hard this year on improving golf skills and have seen great improvement in our players. The players have really solidified as a team, and are working in unison to help themselves and their fellow players on golf fundamentals. Our golf players are prepared for next year to challenge for the league championship, because of all the hard work the team did this year.”
