Oftentimes, movies are marketed as one way in the trailer and then they turn out to be very different. This could be a good thing because it keeps it exciting, but it also misleads you.
The Drama, directed by Kristoffer Borgioli (Dream Scenario) and stars Zendaya who plays Emma and Robert Pattinson who plays Charlie.
It was marketed as a romcom, and even though it does have some of the traditional elements of a romcom – two people falling in love and there being some misunderstanding splitting them up and then getting back together – it also feels like a thriller.
It was intense and very unpredictable. You never knew where the story would go, which was both good and bad. The movie starts off with Emma and Charlie meeting at a coffee shop and going on their first date. Then it proceeds to the present which is the week before their wedding and they’re having dinner at the place where they plan on having the party.
At the dinner, their friends ask them to say the worst thing they have ever done so they all go and when Emma’s turn comes around what she says shocks everyone. The film deals with how the other characters deal with Emma’s “confession.”
Alana Haim (Licorice Pizza) plays Rachel, the maid of honor. I didn’t like how Rachel and everyone else made it feel like Emma had done the worst thing when I believe Rachel did worse. I feel like their reaction was a bit exaggerated because she didn’t actually do it.
The way Rachel freaks out makes Charlie question Emma and freaks out over it, which was fair because he let other people’s opinion influence how he felt.
But what was a bit unrealistic and made him unlikable was that he has an affair with his coworker Misha played by Hailey Gates, which was confusing because he and Emma were very in love and it made it confusing because he would never have done that.
Another thing that I didn’t like about Charlie’s character was that instead of telling Emma about what happened with Misha, he proceeds to act like nothing happened and he goes on with the wedding, even though you could see that it seemed like none of them were sure if they really wanted to go on with it.
Emma eventually finds out what happened and she runs away at the reception and we never know if they end up together. I believe that they decided to start again, since at the end we see Emma introducing herself to Charlie and basically just starting again.
My favorite character was probably Emma because she was a compelling and humanizing character, who truly learns to have empathy and goes through growth.
Some of the highlights were how we get to see Emma struggles as a kid and why she has the thoughts that she does, which helps give the viewers some perspective and makes the viewers understand her and have empathy for her.
I had mixed feelings about the ending because we don’t know if they eventually end up together or not.
Since nowadays every movie that comes out is either a remake, a sequel, or a biopic it was exciting to see a new original movie. I would give the movie an 8/10 because, like most A24 movies, it’s unpredictable and exciting and I like how it is an overall new concept that hasn’t been done before.
